International Literacy Association Choices Reading List


Since 1974, Children’s Choices have been a trusted source of book recommendations used by teachers, librarians, parents¡ªand children themselves. IRA and the Children’s Book Council cosponsor the project.


Since 1987, the Young Adults’ Choices project has developed an annual list of new books that will encourage adolescents to read. The books are selected by the readers themselves, so they are bound to be popular with middle and secondary school students. The reading list is a trusted source of book recommendations, used by adolescents, their parents, teachers, and librarians.


Since 1989, the Teachers’ Choices project has developed an annual annotated reading list of new books that will encourage young people to read. These are books that kids will enjoy¡ªand that contribute to learning across the curriculum.

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Noteworthy books for children and teens.?Capitol Choices has included librarians, teachers, booksellers, children’s literature specialists, reviewers, and magazine editors who work in cities, suburbs, and rural areas in and around Washington, D.C. Since 1996, they have been meeting, discussing, and selecting recommended books for young people through the high school years.

PBS Parents


This is a web-based literacy program to encourage boys to become lifelong readers. It includes a list of books designed specifically to address boys¡¯ interests.


Since 1997, kids, teachers, librarians, and parents have enthusiastically turned to FunBrain for its free educational games, online books, and comics. FunBrain, created for kids age preschool through grade 8, offers more than 100 fun, interactive games that develop skills in math, reading, and literacy. Plus, kids can read a variety of popular books and comics on the site, including Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Amelia Writes Again, and Brewster Rocket.


National Geographic Explorer For Kids is an online version of the award-wining magazine.

Arlington STEM Volunteer Program

The Arlington STEM Volunteer Program aims to foster STEM literacy for all students and help prepare students for futures in STEM careers. ?An affiliate of the?, program professionals commit to volunteering in a school throughout the school year to assist K-12 STEM teachers in their classrooms. ?Our volunteers work with the classroom teachers to develop activities that utilize their unique skills and qualifications. The Arlington STEM Volunteer Program offers a unique opportunity for both students and volunteers alike.
